In Atlantic City AP reports that a skater representing Indiana and four statuesque beauties from Arkansas won the opening rounds of the Miss America competition on Wednesday night, showcasing early success for the named contestants.
Mary Lynn Haglund 19 an Olympic hopeful performed a ballet and flag on a 16 by 20 foot mini ice rink on the Convention Hall stage to win the talent honors. Sharon Ann Evans 20 tallest contestant 6 foot won the swim suit division with 37 25 37 135 pounds. She studies political science at Ouachita Baptist University and aims for a diplomatic career.
Polish officials led by Wladyslaw Gomulka and President Edward Ochab welcomed Charles de Gaulle at the airport. Ochab called the visit an important political event as Poland and France reaffirmed Franco-Polish friendship and joint wartime solidarity against oppression. De Gaulle pledged to strengthen economic scientific and technical ties while focusing on security and peace. He recalled World War II kinship and the deep bonds forged in hardship and resistance.
In South Vietnam, Buddhists denounce Thieu as a traitor after he signed a charter recognizing another Buddhist sect. The bureau notes improved job figures with unemployment for Black workers down from 7.8 to 6.9 percent, yet still double the rate for whites. U S forces reported striking rail lines near Hanoi and Lang Co and Ky Dong, with B 12 bombers pounding positions in the DMZ. In Tam Ky, a guard battle stemmed a prison assault as Viet Cong attacked the 1st Corps city. 536 enemy sorties were flown with 219 killed and 40 wounded among defenders. A Navy gunship helicopter killed seven Viet Cong and destroyed or damaged 11 sampans in the Mekong Delta as fighting raged nearby. South Vietnamese armored personnel carriers provided fire support to repel guerrilla incursions and a bridge assault near Tam Ky was repulsed.
University of Virginia scrapped a mixed turf on the historic lawn after a broad herbicide attack against crab grass and weeds. Officials plan to reseed with drought tolerant blue grass, install an underground sprinkler system, and prune diseased trees to restore Jefferson’s vista by next spring.
Pope Paul VI, who became pope in June 1963 after the death of John XXIII, has toured globally for peace and Christian unity. He spoke at the U N General Assembly in New York on October 4 1965, and celebrated Mass at Yankee Stadium during a busy world trip including visits to the Holy Land India Portugal and Turkey. After a 42 day summer stay at Castel Gandolfo he returned tired but said he had much work to do, driving from the airport after a two day Turkey visit to meet Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras.
Butler addressed Young Democrats in Richmond saying Governor Godwin will wait until after elections to outline recommendations for the General Assembly. He called such a strategy traditional in Virginia politics and urged voters to know who they are voting for.
Greensboro AP report says a man Lester Bobby Ward 54 of Elyone and a woman Ethel Bean Cox 44 of Kernersville trailer park were found dead in a badly burned one room basement. Medical examiner Dr. Lawrence L. Beall ruled body burns and asphyxiation. Police noted the room was cluttered with beer cans and wine bottles.
Kim, a miner, had been drinking mine water and grew sleepy when two men broke through to his recess. After five hours, rescuers pulled him to the surface to a cheering crowd of 500 villagers. President Park praised Kim and doctors planned to fly him to Seoul for further treatment. a U.S. Army helicopter stood by.
