Ethel Waters Dies After Lengthy Illness at 80
Actress and singer Ethel Waters died at a friend's home after a long illness. The blues gospel legend battled high blood pressure diabetes and heart weakness. Billy Graham called her loss heaven's gain and noted her faith. Waters rose from Chester Pa to Broadway and Hollywood, famed for Stormy Weather Am I Blue and Dinah and won a 1950 Drama Critics Award for Pinky. Her career shifted in 1958 toward gospel singing with Graham's crusades and she sang at a Nixon era worship service in 1971.
