A Danville ceremony marked the payoff of the Pinnacles bond and showcased the town’s electric system gains. Visitors toured the hydro plant, viewed the surge tanks and Townes Dam, and heard from Adkins, Aiken, and Hylton about the project’s history, negotiations, and impact on the community.
Funeral services for Ralph N. Sangree were held Wednesday afternoon from Oak Grove Christian Church with pastors Frank Fuller Cecil Davis and Robert Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. pallbearers included Raleigh Shields Nelson Motley Harold Motley Norman Motley Elvin Motley Frank Motley Calvin Bennett and Guy Riddle.
Funeral services for George Washington Cox of 210 Farrar St. will be held at 4 p.m. in the Wrenn Yeatts Chapel with burial in Mountain View Cemetery. Cox, former proprietor of North Main Recreation Center, died Tuesday night at Memorial Hospital after illness. A lifelong Danville resident, he was born Feb. 22, 1916, married to Shirley Smith since June 29, 1957, and served 33 months in the Pacific during World War II. He attended First Pilgrim Holiness Church and is survived by his wife, three sisters Myrtle Burton, Mildred Moorefield of Danville, Ruby Barbra of York Pa., and two brothers Gorman Cox of Danville, Percy Cox of Glenwood.
Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Evans were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Gretna Baptist Church by the Rev. H Cummins. Interment was in the Gretna Burial Park. Pallbearers were William Scruggs Overton Owens Woody Brinkly Frank Davis Benny Nicholson Bill Evans.
The Pittsylvania County ASCS announced that all 1965 wheat and feed grain payments are computed and ready. John T. Davis, manager in Chat ham, said farm operators must sign an application confirming compliance before checks can be mailed. Cards have been mailed requesting visits to sign the applications.
Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon for Henry Larkin McMillan 42 of Martinsville from Trinity Friends Church with interment at Rose Jown Burial Park. He died Monday night at his Henry County home from a gunshot wound described as personal safety related by medical examiner Dr. Allen Thomas. Surviving are his wife Mary Lou McMillan a son Phillip and three daughters Audrey Brenda and Linda all of Martinsville his parents Benton and Mrs McMillan of Bassett five sisters and several in laws.
Diana Plaster died in her sleep at 87 and will be laid to rest at Schoolfield Cemetery after a 2 p.m. Friday service at Calvary Baptist Church Edgewood. She lived at 343 Ferry Rd. in Danville for over 50 years and was a longtime Calvary member. Survived by six daughters, three sons, a brother, 25 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Six year old Gloria B Tanner of West End Ave suffered abrasions to both knees and a rib injury yesterday afternoon after being struck by Dr William Leonard Nufer s car at Broad and Cleveland streets. She ran into the path of the vehicle and was knocked down by the right front bumper. A few minutes later a truck loaded with asphalt rammed into the rear of the car on Piney Forest Rd at Riverside Drive, causing heavy damages while Mrs Hazel White Turner of Layton Ave stopped at a red light when the truck driven by Edra Dean Owen of 175 Nelson Ave collided with her vehicle.
Alfred M. Frix Jr proposes regular Saturday auctions of home items at a site beside Purdum Paint Co on Piney Forest Rd if the plan to rezone the property to M 1 light industrial is approved by Danville Planning Commission.
Maynard Alvin McDaniel, 34, named Pittsylvania County deputy sheriff by Sheriff Henry O. Wink. A Porter-Disston veteran, he replaces Richard Wayne Myers who resigned Aug 20 after starting July 1 on the force. McDaniel, reared at Riceville, married father of one, veteran of four years in the Air Force, begins duties yesterday. He plans to move to Glenwood area as house becomes vacant. Position created by the County Board of Supervisors and State Compensation Board.
Abe Newman 68 brother of Nathan Newman of Danville died last Sunday in Washington DC from a heavy attack. Born in Leeds England he came to Danville in 1918 after WWI service. He worked with his brother at The Hub Clothier until 1927 then moved to Washington. Survived by wife Bell two daughters one son and five grandchildren.
Elizabeth Kenerley funeral services were conducted at the First Evangelical Methodist Church by Rev. Frank Washburn and Rev. Don Whitfield. Interment followed in Woodland Cemetery Winston-Salem North Carolina with pallbearers Thurston Baker Royal Bryant Claude Ferguson Rev. K. E. Story Frank Elliott and Rev. Percy Ricketts.
In East Salisbury a tunnel over three feet in diameter was unearthed by workmen digging a city sewer line. Believed used as an escape route for Union prisoners during the Civil War, it ran east to west about two feet underground and was in excellent condition near the site of a Confederate prison camp. Authorities had dug a four‑foot trench around the former prison to thwart escapes. The old prison stood about three blocks from the current U.S. National cemetery location.
Virginia Creeper VI, billed as the fastest eight legged racer, won a run off in Chincoteague, Va, ahead of his three brothers on a Crisfield Md replica derby course. Trainer Capt. Dink Thornton explained the win as training over blood line with all crabs sired by last year’s winner. Creep 6 C came second, Creep er 6 B third, and Creeper 6 A fourth. the brothers may serve as standby racers for Saturday’s main derby.
The Associated Press reports slight gains on the Eastern North Carolina flue cured belt and modest rises on the South Carolina border belt. Border belt prices rose $1 to $2 per hundred with some lots at $76 to $77, while the Eastern belt showed $1.83 shifts on average from Tuesday. Government loans took 5.7 percent of Tuesday Border belt sales, and 6.4 percent of Eastern belt sales.
The funeral for Doc T. Clay, 73, will be at 4 30 PM in Swice good Funeral Home chapel. Burial follows at Mountain View Cemetery. Clay died yesterday at Memorial Hospital after a year of ill health. A Granville N C native, he lived on Stokesland Ave for 45 years and worked at Dan River Mills for 45 years before becoming a paint contractor in 1942. He married Dolly Elizabeth Brown on May 25 1913 and was a member of Schoolfield Methodist Church. He was born April 29 1892, son of Henry C. and Ella Smith Clay. Survived by wife, three daughters Elsie George Lillian C White Nellie Toler, three sisters Mary Pruitt Stella Pribble Lucy Shumate, and one grandchild Richard White. The family resides on Stokesland Ave Ext and the body is at the funeral home.
John Lewis Jackson, 86, of Phenix, retired merchant, died Tuesday at home. Funeral Friday at 3 p.m. from Oak View Presbyterian Church near Phenix with burial in church cemetery. Survived by wife, three daughters, two sons, two brothers.
