Explosions Kill Gadsten Fire Chief and Medics

Two blasts at a Gadsten service station and adjacent trailer home killed fire chief James R Spears and medics Mike Thornton and Mike Patrick, injuring 28 others including 13 firefighters. A tanker unloaded gasoline when a spark from static likely ignited fumes, triggering a second explosion that scorched about three acres. Witnesses describe flames shooting into the air as storage tanks exploded. Hospital reports detail multiple injuries with several in serious condition. National Guard helicopters were authorized to airlift the severely burned to a Birmingham burn center, though officials say it may not be necessary. One fire truck and several vehicles were destroyed. the service station was incinerated.

Tear Gas Used On Anti Busing Crowd In Louisville

On the eve of Jefferson County school openings police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of anti busing demonstrators in southern Louisville. About 1,150 protesters sat in the Preston Highway area as riot police fired tear gas after a five minute warning. No injuries reported. six arrests. The night followed a peace effort by NAACP leader Lyman Johnson and anti busing advocate Bob Deprez.
