Clarence Norris, last surviving Scottsboro defendant, is pardoned by the Alabama Pardon Parole Board and Gov. Wallace after 45 years. He spent years in prison, on death row, and a fugitive, insisting on innocence. Norris awaits freedom and plans to return to Alabama.
Norris, once a fugitive, spoke of freedom and rights after finally receiving a pardon. He said he learned of the decision in a Harlem bar via a call to the NAACP. The Pardon-Parole Board, led by Chairman Norman Ussery, previously resisted the petition, insisting Norris return to Alabama before reconsideration.
Virgil Partch Ussery and board members signed the pardon after reviewing an official application. Clarence Norris, the last living Scottsboro Boy, spoke at NAACP headquarters, saying he received a full pardon from Alabama for the 1931 alleged rape aboard a freight train.
Miles leads Coloradans Against Number Ten CANT a coalition formed to stop the amendment after a Colorado Supreme Court ruling revived the proposal to the ballot. The court overruled a lower court that had invalidated over 9,000 petition signatures gathered via newspaper advertisements, saying the technicality wasn't sufficient to keep the measure off the ballot.
Bands of angry white students clashed with police in South Boston during a Monday boycott protesting busing. Twenty two whites were arrested for disorderly conduct. no blacks were arrested. At Charlestown High a dynamite stick was found undetonated. South Boston High saw gasoline and a burning flare thrown into an empty classroom. The day ended with blacks entering schools orderly as police watched. The unrest follows protests against federal court-ordered busing amid the long running Southie resistance.
