Area Teachers Endorse Virginia Bond Referendum

The Piedmont University Unit of the Virginia Education Association endorses passage of Virginia's 1977 bond referendum. Leader Christopher M. Virginia shows variable cloudiness through Tuesday with a chance of showers in the southwestern mountains Monday and on Tuesday across the state. Highs Monday near 60s, lows in the 40s to around 50, highs Tuesday in the 60s to around 70. North Carolina: partly cloudy Monday with highs from the 60s in the mountains to the 70s in the east.

Pastor Installation at Happy Home UCC in Ruffin

The Rev. Robert A. Lewis will be installed as pastor of Happy Home United Church of Christ on Highway 700 in Ruffin at 4 p.m. Sunday. The installation will be conducted by the Rev. Edwin M. Alcorn and the Rev. D. Gene Peeler, with Donald Stroud presenting. The sermon, “Our Task,” will be delivered by the Rev. Daniel W. Jones. Several pastors will participate. Lewis, a Massachusetts native, has served in New England and Florida. He is married to Lois Lennon and they have three children. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Museum Opens Open House at National Tobacco Textile Museum

The National Tobacco Textile Museum hosts an open house on Sunday October 30 from 2 to 5 p.m. Hand weaving demonstrations will be given by Mrs. Ann Everitt of Yanceyville NC. A 15 minute color film Leaf will be shown every half hour with additional exhibits. Refreshments served.

Manslaughter Charge Filed and Gatewood Returned to City

A 44-year-old Danville man, Leonard Harvey Powell, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and driving without a license after striking 75-year-old Lillian Crowder on Whitmell Street. Powell remained free on 35,000 bond. Preston Leroy Gatewood, 30, alias Frank Lee, was extradited from Clinton County to face Aug 26 1975 Old Dutch Supermarket robbery charges with two counts of malicious wounding. jailed on 20,000 bond. Isaiah Clark, 27, was charged with grand larceny for stealing 112.81 dollars worth of property from Schewel Furniture Co. on Oct. 14. preliminary hearing set for Monday.

Alvin Brandon Receives Westinghouse Promotion

Alvin Brandon, a computer operator at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, is promoted to manufacturing supervisor on second shift. He will oversee section 31 cooler fabrication and section 37 tank fabrication. Brandon, from Halifax County, is a 1957 Mary Bethune High School graduate and has studied at Brooklyn Institute of Computer Technology and Danville Community College. He joined Westinghouse in Sept 1970 after working at Daystrom Furniture, and his wife Goldie plus two sons Lorenzo and Alonzo live with him on South Boston Rt. 3.
