Gov. David Boren and his wife Janna announced they are divorcing in a joint statement. The action, filed in Madill, cites incompatibility as the sole grounds. Children will alternate custody with Boren retaining visitation.
A neurologist testified that Karen Quinlan’s condition is “grotesque” but that no physician may end her life. The hearing reviewed whether doctors should disconnect the respirator, with family backing and Vatican commentary cited. Additional testimony noted that Quinlan may never regain consciousness and that a breakthrough could alter views in the future.
British honorary consul Basil Burwood-Taylor, 38, was kidnapped on an open street by men believed Eritrean rebels in Asmara Ethiopias capital. Addis Ababa radio said roads blocked as Britain and Eritrea tensions escalate. The Eritrean Liberation Front holds four Americans and six Ethiopian workers captive at a mountain hideout. The incident comes as the foreign office notes Britain has no regular diplomats in Asmara and Burwood-Taylor served as honorary consul for several years.
Madrid reports 82 year old Gen Francisco Franco suffered a relapse after a heart attack two days earlier. The bulletin opens the route for a constitutional transfer of power to heir Juan Carlos de Borbon as cabinet plans a Friday meeting. Juan Carlos, Premier Arias Navarro, and senior officials rush to the Pardo Palace. a palace spokesman says Franco is recovering and rejects coma reports.
Fraser said the bomb was aimed at him and not Miss Kennedy, who was shaken but unharmed. The order permits the defense-appointed psychiatrist to treat Hearst at San Mateo County Jail while a federal panel assesses her fitness for trial on bank robbery charges.
Scotland Yard, facing accusations of racism, spends 50 000 on full page ads in four London papers to attract more black and Asian recruits. Of 21 302 officers, only 40 are black. the force notes prior entrants since 1967 and warns against a monolithic force alienating communities.
