Stock Market Quiet As Housing Data Edge Up
The market finished with limited activity on Tuesday as the Dow edged down and the S&P 500 fell slightly while turnover was light. Housing starts for September rose 11 percent from August, supporting a late session advance after a government report showed slower economic growth in the third quarter. Chase Manhattan rose 4 to 23 as third quarter earnings rose to 0.64 a share, offset by weaker nine month results. The American Stock Exchange composite edged higher while the Dow and broader indexes posted mixed moves amid a subdued trading day.
