Authorities described broad public support amid protests and cautioned against misinterpretation overseas.
Indonesia's KOTI orders void all activities of parties tied to the Sept. 30 coup. Communists face outlaw fears while Sukarno cedes to Brig. Gen. Sutjipto. Air Vice Marshal Omar Dhani eyed for overseas leave as Suharto, 44, takes command of the 270,000-man army after Yani’s murder.
In Washington a congressional committee hearing was announced as talks with Cuba on refugee entry continue. Miami NAACP leader Donald Wheeler Jones urged Johnson to act to aid oppressed Cubans and the economically displaced in Miami, predicting most new arrivals will stay in the area despite resettlement efforts.
A planned noon to 2 p.m. Viet Nam protest by about 1,200 students at Washington and Lee University failed to attract demonstrators or observers.
