Averett Parents Weekend Activities Planned at College
More than 20 visitors are expected for Averett College Parents Weekend with events starting Friday including a home soccer game against Virginia Wesleyan College at Bonner Junior High School. A Saturday schedule covers coffee, the Parents Association meeting, entertainment, tours, workshops, a Wake Forest field hockey game, and a Sunday worship service at 10 a.m.

George Alvis Dix 73 dies after long illness in Danville
George Alvis Dix 73 of Pelham North Carolina died Thursday morning at The Memorial Hospital of Danville after extended decline in health. He worked as a loom fixer and briefly at Winn-Dixie. He was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Survivors include wife Lena O Neal Dix four daughters Shirley Leydecker Louise Perry Dorothy Garcia Bonnie DeMarco two sons Alvis Dix Jr Edward Dix three sisters Mary Elizabeth Wash Dallas Smith Lucille Powell one brother Clabhorn Dix eleven grandchildren. Services at 2 p.m. from Swicegood Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev Wade Wright with interment in Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday 7:30-9 p.m. at the funeral home and at the residence on Rt 700 at other times.

David Syrotiak of the National Marionette Theater brings an adult level show to Averett College auditorium Monday at 8 p.m. The performance pairs music theater and puppetry, with Syrotiak constructing the marionettes. The children's matinee Circus will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Elementary School, free, while the adult show costs 1.75 for the general public.
