Hogsten was trapped by a slate fall in a mine shaft and remained submerged for hours. Rescuers reached him at the surface with help from track mine co owner Elmer McClanahan of Grundy and John W. Walkliff of Grundy. McClanahan credited timbering with preventing a total collapse that could have killed Hogsten.
