In Bergamo Italy police report eight elderly women ages 65 to 85 died at a psychiatric hospital after receiving heart tonic injections on Saturday. Seven others are in grave condition as investigators probe the incident.
Authorities report Maria Val isecchi, 86, died first after injections given as part of routine care at Semale hospital. Within two hours six more patients including an 83-year-old nun suffered acute stomach pains and died, while others were hospitalized. Police noted the injection vial contained an Italian pharmaceutical valid for 16 years. Investigators consider other causes such as food poisoning. Autopsies on younger victims showed cardiac conduction system malformations, suggesting inherited arrhythmia defects may underlie deaths. The case led Italian Health Ministry inspectors to review the hospital.
