The AP market basket survey shows September lifting family grocery bills with coffee up after a summer frost, butter and eggs higher, pork chops more costly while sugar and beef declined. Price trends varied by city. milk, hogs, and feed costs pushed costs up overall.
In congressional testimony the Secret Service said a San Francisco detective called Moore a "no problem" and not a threat to President Ford. James Burke disclosed Moore phoned the service three times the day of the shooting but agents were not connected. He noted miscommunications with agents Yauger and Haskell and with a female administrator, and said the service ran a 24 hour command post during Ford's visit.
Japan's Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako arrive at Patrick Henry Airport for a two-week state visit signaling a new phase in postwar Japanese American relations. Security is tight as the couple begins a ceremonial tour that will include Washington and a cross-country trip before meeting President Ford.
Virginia shows mostly cloudy conditions with showers possible in the southeast on Wednesday and night, highs near 80 in the mountains and 60s to 70s near the coast. President Ford arrived in Chicago amid intensified security after two assassination attempts and pledged to keep communications open by prudent, practical means. He noted traveling through 38 states and hopes to visit the remaining ones by year end, while aides say 39 states have been visited. Police arrested a woman with a gun near the Conrad Hilton, but the Secret Service said it bore no relation to the president.
Starting next January 1, the government said out of pocket hospital costs for 24.1 million Medicare beneficiaries will rise 12 percent to 101 dollars per hospital bill. The change covers extended hospital care and post hospitalization care, with daily and per stay charges outlined for days 61 to 90 and 21 to 100 in nursing homes. Medicare will pay after the initial 104 dollar charge for the first 60 hospital days and 20 nursing home days. The lifetime reserve of 60 extra hospital days increases to 52 dollars per day. The medical coverage for doctors remains frozen at 6.70 dollars monthly since July 1974.
The wife and three sons of General Motors Hydramatic Division works manager William Schulenberg were released unharmed after a ransom of 54 000 dollars was paid. Police and GM officials confirmed the money came from Schulenberg’s personal funds. One son remained briefly captive while the payoff details were completed. The assailants used a car trunk with air holes to transport the family.
Hurricane Gladys with winds up to 110 mph and strong storms moved toward the eastern United States with forecasters saying it is too early to determine which coastal areas might be endangered. At 10:30 p.m. EDT Gladys was about 550 miles east of Miami tracking west-northwest.
