Danville to gain legal aid service within six months
Henry Woodward of Roanoke's Legal Aid Society predicts a legal aid program for Danville and Pittsylvania County, funded by the Legal Services Corporation with a $300,000 grant, to open after office space and staff are in place and be available to about 21,885 eligible residents across 18 counties and five cities. The VLAS will staff four attorneys and paralegals, offer civil aid only, and avoid criminal, desegregation, or political cases.

Garland FP Hughes 66 of Chatham Route 1 died Monday at 3 30 p m while hunting in Fowlerville Michigan apparently of a heart attack He was born November 24 1911 in Sutherlin a son of the late Robert Hughes and Mary Emma Chandler Hughes He was a retired merchant and member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church He was survived by his wife Elsie McGregor Hughes two sons Floyd Thomas Hughes and Arthur Kenneth Hughes both of Fowlerville a daughter Gladys H Cosgrove Brighton Michigan three brothers Joe T Hughes George Hughes and Woodrow Hughes all of Sutherlin five sisters Sallie Anderson Elsie H Owen Annie Mae Hodnett Emma H White and Thelma H Bane and ten other relatives The funeral will be Friday at 2 pm at Wrenn Yeatts Chapel by Rev Michael Poole Interment in Highland Burial Park The body is at the funeral home with family receiving friends Thursday 7 to 8 pm at the residence on State Road 832
