Weather forecast splits good and bad news for winter

Washington AP Science Writer Frank Carey reports that the National Weather Service issued a mixed winter forecast amid fuel shortages. The Far West and northern regions have about a 60 percent chance of a colder winter, the Midwest and much of the South about 60 percent for milder conditions, with a toss-up for the East Coast and Great Basin. The forecast marks a public release of a finalized seasonal outlook, with differences from earlier preliminary estimates and higher confidence in odds than before.

December flu outlook cited by CDC expert in Atlanta

In Atlanta Dr Robert Rubin of the National Center for Disease Control says December is influenza month but this year’s outbreak should be less severe than prior seasons. He notes no confirmed US cases have been isolated so far this year and compares December to the World Series in October.

Evangelicals Push Social Action as Core Belief

In New York a shift within Protestant conservatives toward social action is framed as an enduring mandate rooted in biblical imperatives. Led by Ronald J. Sider, about 40 evangelical leaders signed a Chi cago declaration urging Christian discipleship to confront social injustice and reexamine living standards and resource distribution. They admit past failures to address racism and economic oppression and call for reducing national worship of military and economic power.
