Catholic College Awarded Grant for Educational Research

Virginia’s only Catholic college, Marymount College in Arlington, is awarded a $50,000 federal grant. It will join Bennett College in Millbrook and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in Purchase to study college freshmen. Twenty six small colleges form six consortiums nationwide.

Man Spent 23 Years In Cell Given 14-18 Months For Escaping

Elmer Davis, 34, who spent 23 years in prison, was sentenced in Haywood County to 14 to 18 months on an escape charge after his murder case was dropped. Davis, once facing death for the Cooper slaying, has said he plans to work honestly and not steal again. He spoke of a personal philosophy and a plan to avoid contact with relatives as he seeks freedom.

Woman in court over burglary case recalls son's Vietnam death

Mabel Stewart sat in Criminal Court in Baltimore on Tuesday as a witness in a breaking and entering and larceny case. Her 24 year old son Wilbert was reported killed in action in Vietnam just before she left home, yet she continued to testify, saying it was her civic duty. Judge James A. Perrott postponed the case indefinitely during the proceeding.
