In a landmark conference, Edwin Aldrin Garry Moore Wilbur Mills and others acknowledged alcoholism. The Earl of Kimberley and many others urged convincing alcoholics they can live happy, normal lives without alcohol.

In Marseille France Emile Herve 49 died after a loaded pistol placed beside his sink discharged when a draft slammed the kitchen door. Pathologist Dr Joseph Cambacedes 65 was killed instantly by the shot during routine examination. Police reported the accidental firing occurred as the door moved the pistol.
The United States team defeated the Italian Blue Team to win the world contract bridge championship in Monte Carlo. Team members include Tra Rubin, Paul Soloway, Bill Eisenberg, Fred Hamilton, Erik Paulsen, Hugh Ross, with Dan Morse as non playing captain. Italy’s Sandro Salvetti led the rivals.
