Ford Collapsibility Study Aims to Soften Crash Impact

Ford and rivals study collapsibility to absorb crash energy while keeping the body intact. The effort uses 2000 frames per minute cameras and a 180 pound rubber steel dummy named Oscar to test how softer fronts, crumple zones, lighter frames, and longer car bodies might reduce passenger injury. Experts warn higher costs, look and weight increases, and possible tougher repairs though safety gains are sought.
