Woman becomes Switzerland's first female top political post

Elisabeth Blunschy, 64, a lawyer and widow with three children, is elected president of the national council, the lower house, becoming the first woman to hold Switzerland's highest office. Carter seeks joint approach at seven nation economic summit

Washington AP Carter administration aims for a joint approach to world economic problems at a London summit with leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, and Italy. President-elect Carter plans to meet NATO heads after, return next Tuesday. He stresses shared goals on energy, atomic weapon control, reducing arms sales, and boosting growth in less-developed countries.

FPC Recommends Overland Gas Pipeline System Plan

The Federal Power Commission advised President Carter to back an overland trans Canada gas pipeline from Alaska. Four FPC members split on the preferred route between Alaska Arctic Gas and Northwest Pipeline Corp. If neither plan is feasible, El Paso Natural Gas Co. offered an alternative. Costs range from 6.5 to 8.2 billion with completion aimed for the early 1980s.
