The department filed civil and criminal complaints against Fletcher Oil and Refining Co of Wilmington California Golden Eagle Refining Co Los Angeles Ultramar Co Ltd of London and MacMillan Run Free Co Inc New York City alleging a rebrand scheme. The six firms allegedly sold over 30 million dollars worth of gasoline at wholesale across five states in 1970 and other corporations firms and individuals were named as co conspirators though not identified as defendants.

Gen Omar Bradley the highest ranking U.S. military officer and five star general suffered a stroke. The 82 year old was admitted to UCLA Medical Center after the episode at his home. Col Gerald C. Burch said he remained conscious and stable. Bradley, who commanded U S ground forces in Europe in World War II, had been living in Los Angeles and had attended a recent dedication at Patriotic Hall.
Tropical Storm Agnes reached 36.5 feet causing extensive property damage in downtowns and warehouses. The Appomattox River is expected to crest near 12 to 13 feet in Petersburg Thursday night. At least 631 secondary roads are closed due to flooding or landslides, with some primary roads blocked by slides or high water.
