National asylums for disabled Civil War soldiers opened

In 1866 Congress amended the Volunteer Soldiers Act to create permanent national asylums for disabled volunteers. Early stations opened in Augusta Maine Milwaukee Wisconsin and Dayton Ohio with others following in Hampton Virginia Johnson City Tennessee Bath New York Hot Springs South Dakota Leavenworth Kansas Marion Indiana Los Angeles California. The system grew to care for over 21009 Civil War soldiers and later expanded for Spanish American War World War I and II veterans.

Studebaker Tells Owners To Relax As Parts Remain Available

DETROIT AP The last Studebaker will roll off the line within 10 days, leaving 1.5 million owners with one question What do I do now The firm says relax depreciation may occur but parts will stay available as they did for Packard which stopped 10 years ago The South Bend plant stopped US production in 1963 and the Hamilton Ontario plant will finish assembly by March 23 Affected dealers will be encouraged to stay in business and stock parts while the firm maintains six regional depots and a large South Bend main depot with 55 000 items worth about 10 12 million The company forecasts a long lasting parts business and expects depreciation mainly in 1963 1966 models, while noting many components are standard industry parts
