A Norfolk Portsmouth Virginia Beach flood disaster left about 500 homes damaged or demolished and caused estimated losses of 2 million in local infrastructure. Civil Defense crews evacuated hundreds while military units aided in rescue and relief efforts.

An Idaho trooper who worked through a blizzard on State Highway 33 near Newdale and Teonia died minutes after collapsing in a police car. He had returned from a long shift to assist a stalled bus and a motorist, guiding the driver to safety before suffering chest pains and a heart attack. He leaves behind a wife, two stepchildren, and a large extended family.

In New Hanover County, Carolina Beach saw several inches of salt water cover roads, with Wrightsville Beach reporting three foot high tides and extensive sand removal planned.
The Dominican Republic undergoes rapid regime changes after Trujillo's assassination on May 30, 1961. A coup plot against the Balaguer government surfaces, with U.S. naval forces nearby and Rodriguez Echavarria slated for trial on charges related to the coup.
The House backed a plan to force special sessions in Pennsylvania Missouri and Massachusetts to redraw districts. Failure to call sessions or enact redistricting would require all state House candidates to run at large. Rep. Francis E. Walter introduced the amendment which passed 18 to 54 amid Pennsylvania’s split over whether to enact new redistricting laws, with concern the legislature might wrangle and fail to act.
