President Ford told about 3,000 Tampa supporters he is absolutely certain he will win the Florida primary and that a big Florida victory would show Reagan backers they cannot win. Arizona Republic cites former Lockheed executive Farmest Hauser testifying before a Senate subcommittee that colonels received cash gratuities of 10 000 to 26 000 from Lockheed and rivals to steer foreign business. He says Pentagon officials knew and turned a blind eye, with MAAG assignments aiding aircraft sales. Hauser notes payments laundered through multiple banks and occasional entertaining.
Former Mobil Oil engineer Norman Rees, 69, who aided Soviet intelligence then worked as a double agent for the FBI from 1971 to 1973, died Sunday from a personal safety related gunshot wound. Autopsy underway. The Dallas Times Herald published his claim of Soviet medals for aiding oil industry espionage, including a Mobil catalytic cracking converter design. Mobil declined comment.
About 3,000 demonstrators marched peacefully around South Boston High School to press for an end to busing for racial integration. Senator Birch Bayh defended busing as a last resort, while Massachusetts candidates largely avoided the topic, highlighting the contentiousness of desegregation in the state.
Weather report shows Mostly sunny in Virginia with unseasonably warm Monday, cooler near the shore. Northern counties may see rain Monday night and through Tuesday, with lows in the 40s and highs in the 40s to 60s. North Carolina expected partly cloudy Monday to Tuesday with possible showers in the mountains. Highs in the 60s. winds and coastal areas show cooler readings.
