Dollar Strengthens Amid Pound Float Fallout
The dollar rose across European markets calming fears of a global currency crisis after Britain's move to float the pound. London closed at 2.4662 dollars per pound, a little over a 5 percent devaluation from 2.60. European markets, including Paris and Frankfurt, saw dollar gains as officials avoided broad intervention and Europe considered controls to stabilize currencies. West Germany limited foreign borrowing and pursued steps to discourage excessive overseas borrowing while keeping dollar support. Chancellor Brandt's cabinet chose milder measures over full float or strict controls, signaling restraint in currency policy.

Hart dropped out after Rubin asked him to, and police waived parade-permit rules to allow the six motorcade escort. The event, styled as a nonviolent show of unity, followed a federal challenge to the city’s 24 day old parade ordinance.
