Johnson visits Philadelphia poverty centers to push OIC plan
President Johnson toured two Philadelphia Opportunities Industrialization Centers founded by Rev. Leon H. Sullivan to boost skills for the poor. He described the effort as a spark of learning and a key to lifting families out of poverty while signaling support for a long national antipoverty program. He then traveled to San Antonio for the funeral of Huffman Baines, his great-uncle and a Texas telephone pioneer, calling him Uncle Huff.
