Leaf Official Warns of Loose Leaf Tobacco Market Disruption
A. C. Monk Jr., president of the Leaf Tobacco Exporters Association, told the annual convention that raising loose leaf sales days from seven to twelve could disrupt marketing of flue cured tobacco in Virginia and the Carolinas. He expects 20 to 40 percent of the crop to be sold loose, risking glutted redrying plants, storage shortages, and higher processing costs. He urged meeting foreign buyers’ preference for bundled tobacco and named R. B. Bridgforth as president, W. S. Skinner as vice president, L. S. Ficklen as treasurer, with J. E. Bohannon and E. R. Sykes on the executive committee.

Commissioner Howe confirms push for total desegregation
In a letter to Sen. Sam J. Ervin Jr., U.S. Education Commissioner Harold Howe says his office will seek eventual total desegregation of Southern schools. He notes 15 NC systems desegregated, 10 under court orders, with many planning complete desegregation soon. 123 NC systems use freedom of choice plans. Caswell County has a freedom of choice plan with few Black transfers, but may desegregate faculties this year by placing at least one Black teacher in each white school.
