Fire Destroys Maury County Jail Killing 34 Inmates

Inmate Garry A. Pillow recalls flames and toxic smoke sweeping the Maury County Jail as 34 inmates and eight visitors died in a Sunday fire started by a borrowed cigarette in a padded isolation cell. Pillow survived among 22 inmates, helped by a wet towel and staying low as smoke filled the unlocked day-room complex. He was in fair condition Monday in the hospital.
