Ben Het siege shows up as heaviest action in Vietnam

Ben Het camp built by the US 4th Infantry Division sits on muddy hills near Cambodia, defended by Montagnard irregulars and Green Berets. The base faces daily bombardment from Cambodian 85mm guns and North Vietnamese mortars, with sappers nightly and chronic supply problems. The fight is framed as a test of South Vietnamese forces against the North, with defenders arguing to keep the camp away from villages and warning that retreat would reinvade civilian areas. Regulars fear the siege will wear down allied troops as North Vietnamese pressure persists.

Spending Costs and Delays Plague Military Procurement

Vom Baur notes that while personnel and aircraft capture headlines, spending concerns loom large. Defective specifications have cost hundreds of millions and caused major delays in military hardware deliveries. Late delivery of government furnished equipment also forces the government to pay for deals lost or damaged.

Knowles Triumph Shifts Support From Finch in AMA Row

Knowles edged Finch as he tapped a cross section of doctors led by Dr. Richard Wilbur nephew of AMA President Dr. Dwight Wilbur and Dr. John Huge ness of the University of Washington and Dr. John Point of the University of Oklahoma. Finch’s prospective appointees drew mixed backing with Dirksen who had backed the AMA giving no immediate comment. The withdrawal of Finch’s support marked a stunning political win for the 72-year-old Illinois minority leader and a temporary setback for Finch.

Charleston Strikers Demand Higher Wages and Action

Rev. Ralph Abernathy of the SCLC sought release on bond to address a victory rally as Charleston endures a citywide strike. He remained jailed on riot and incitement charges with a $50,000 bond, while curfews and clashes left police and a fireman injured. Labor unions backed the strike with substantial support from UAW and AFLCIO leaders who joined a Mothers Day march. Abernathy required hospital treatment for a peptic ulcer during detention, though his wife said his condition was not serious.
