The landing site team on Tuesday worked to identify a safe 44 by 64 mile ellipse for the Viking craft. Hazard-free space is hard to secure as cameras may not detect objects smaller than a Rose Bowl. Once released from the mother ship on July 4, the lander cannot be steered from Earth.

RALEIGH AP A high school girl Lyng opened a car door and jumped to her death while riding to a swimming spot. Maxine Davis 18 of Youngsville died from head injuries after rolling 102 feet. Driver Donna Jor rigan 17 of Wake Forest said Maxine began to say it was no goal then leapt. The crash occurred on a rural road north of Raleigh near Falls of Neuse river. Investigators found no clear negligence by the driver.
