Hoffa Seeks Parole Rehearing From Board Denial
James P. Hoffa son of the former Teamsters leader filed for a rehearing with the U S Board of Parole after its latest denial of Hoffa s bid for freedom from an eight year term for jury tampering combined with a later five year mail fraud add on. Hoffa resigned from Teamsters affiliate posts and the board planned a July 7 review to decide whether new information warrants a second hearing.

State appeals partial suspension of three Lamar sentences
The South Carolina Attorney General's Office says Circuit Judge Wade Weatherford exceeded authority by suspending portions of the sentences for Lamar High School rioting defendants Jeryl Best and James Dewey Marsh, and reducing L. Deimer Kirven's term. The state argues Weatherford lacked jurisdiction after the original term closed, noting Judge Spruill was presiding when the changes were made.

Black political parties in Deep South mostly scarce
In the Deep South during the 1960s blacks largely stayed within regular state parties or registered as independents. South Carolina formed a black party, the United Citizens, with limited success, while Mississippi and Alabama saw more active splinter groups like the Freedom Democratic and the National Democratic Party of Alabama, yet reforms and courtship of black voters persisted.
