The Fort Hunt High School Band from Fairfax County Virginia won top honors at the Virginia Beach Music Festival beating 21 other bands from as far as Wisconsin and Florida. Directed by Frank B Wickes the 101 member ensemble excelled in concert performance sight reading and marching.

Franklin County Loses Local Judge June 30
ROCKY MOUNT AP After June 30 Franklin County will lack a resident judge for the district and county courts. W A Alexander resigns as part time county court judge as the district courts committee sets two general district judgeships for the Danville and Pittsylvania area. Nelson Light of Pittsylvania becomes full time general district judge July 1. The other position is vacant. Spiros Skenderis and Robert Ward will fill juvenile district judgeships. Franklin County will have no resident judge, sparking concern from Commonwealth's Attorney William G. Davis about insufficient court time.

Health officials destroy birds after psittacosis outbreak
Parakeets infected with psittacosis, a respiratory disease transmissible to humans, were seized and destroyed at the H. L. Green Co. store in Alexandria after eight birds died. The shipment came from Gators of Miami, with no other stores reported affected. Health officials urged buyers in the last three weeks to watch for symptoms and handle suspect birds with extreme caution.

Woman Lost In Woods Found After Tenhour Ordeal
A 95 year old woman Grace Humes visiting Camp Happyland near Richardsville was found at 3 20 a m in dense woods about a mile from camp after a 10 hour search. About 35 law enforcement officers and trail dogs from Virginia counties searched the area. She was reported without a scratch and resumed activities. A second hospital incident reports a 67 year old patient found on hospital property cold but okay.
