Massive search fails to locate missing boy in Smokies

In Gatlinburg Tennessee a search of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for Dennis Martin, a seven year old who vanished on a hiking trip, involved more than 1,000 people including Viet Nam veterans and National Guardsmen. Four Army helicopters aided the effort as ground teams crawled through rough terrain within a 25 mile radius. Dennis, who turned seven on Friday, disappeared a week ago while with his father architect William C. Martin and family. His father remained hopeful and noted the boy might be wandering in lower elevations where water and food could aid survival. The operation, the largest and longest in park history, halted public access to the Cades Cove area for the search operation. Green Beret troops and guardsmen, some airlifted from Camp Shelby, joined the effort with no solid lead on the boy's whereabouts.
