Senate Hearing Divides on Johnson Omnibus Farm Plan
At a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing Johnsons omnibus farm measure drew mixed reactions. National Farmers Union leaders urged expanded programs to raise farm income, while Sen Ellender pressed for cost cuts and more for farmers. Economist Keyserling warned the plan helps few poor farmers and urged programs to move production to needed nations. He cited 43 percent of farm families in poverty versus 17 percent nonfarm families and suggested direct payments to align farmers with national standards. Union leaders called for full parity income and anti-lease of farm allotments with cropland retirement revisions to maximize land use and profitability.

Court Overturns Murder Conviction Of Former Part Time UNC Teacher
North Carolina Supreme Court overturned the first degree murder conviction of Frank Rinaldi, a former UNC part time instructor, granting a new trial. The ruling, 5-2, cites prejudicial and incompetent testimony by key witness Alfred J. Foushee. Rinaldi, 35, was convicted for the bludgeoning death of his 34 year old wife Lucille on Christmas Eve 1963 in Chapel Hill. The court noted evidence of alleged sexual perversion should not alone imply murder without direct ties to the homicide. Dissenting Justices Parker and Sharp argued the evidence was competent. Rinaldi remains on death row at Central Prison in Raleigh awaiting retrial.
