Davis Reports On Return Rebate Mixed Reaction From European Makers
Virginia Tobacco Marketing Agent Roy R. Davis Jr returned from a nine country trip amid questions on a possible $5 per hundred rebate on American tobacco. He said some European manufacturers welcomed the idea but others doubted it would shift buying from other suppliers or offset price jumps of 1964 to 1965. He noted the subsidy’s effect depends on application technique and that Rhodesian supply and N-2 tobacco issues influence decisions. Davis’s month long tour was sponsored by state tobacco bodies and he reported a generally positive reception and calls to continue improving crop ripeness and quality.
