City retirement fund loans to Brightwell protected says finance chief
Randall L. Hall, city finance director, says the Employees Retirement System is safeguarded despite Brightwell firms owing substantial sums. Loans to developers are covered by reimbursable agreements that direct repayments to the retirement system, with interest prepaid and conditions tying reimbursements to development milestones. The Brightwell debt, estimated around $125,000, is not in immediate danger due to these protections.

Pittsylvania County Supervisors urged adding a full time deputy sheriff at a special Chatham meeting to be presented to the State Compensation Board on June 22. If approved, Sheriff Henry O Winn would hire the deputy at a 3660 dollar yearly salary with half funded by the state. The board noted industrial growth and population rise to about 63,000 as reasons for greater protection needs. The department now runs with 10 deputies and three jailors, with most civil duties comprising roughly 75 percent of current deputy work.
