GOP Chief Calls Scott Tax Talk Scare Talk

North Carolina Republican chair Jim Holfhouser dismissed Gov. Bob Scott's warnings of needed cuts to teachers' raises and hospital funds as scare talk. He said no new major taxes would be required if the fall budget was trimmed, and defended GOP push for representation on the Advisory Budget Commission and passage of a fiscal reform bill. He urged citizens to contact legislators as the two parties differ over budget allocations and patronage concerns.

Saigon to assume control of secret U S listening posts

Washington reports Saigon will take over select secret American electronics outposts used to monitor North Vietnamese traffic along Laos and Cambodia borders. The shift, part of Nixon’s troop swap plan, will occur this summer with Vietnamese specialists handling sensor operations and alerting U S forces for air strikes. The report notes the McNamara wall origins and earlier failures but highlights the value of small sensors in detecting enemy movement for targeted bombing. Also mentions a Virginia Rural Affairs study commission public hearing on June 23 in Emporia, chaired by Del. Lyman C. Harrell Jr.
