New York AP reports a sharp Dow Jones drop of more than 60 points since mid May amid peace talks stagnation and inflation. The index closed at 904.60, down from 968.35 on May 14, with experts blaming Fed restraint, high interest rates, and tighter money for the broad pullback.
Explosions damaged a 355-foot steel span of U.S. Route 52 over the Guyandotte River near VC Justice West Virginia. No injuries were reported. A second blast damaged a Norfolk and Western line trestle nearby. Police said only minor surface damage occurred to the bridge and rail line, with vehicles able to pass. The violence appears connected to actions attributed to the National Liberation Front and its push for a provisional government in South Vietnam.
American forces repelled multiple North Vietnamese attacks along the Da Nang Da Nay and An Hoa corridors. William Lewis, a coal mine veteran and ardent labor organizer, steered the Congress of Industrial Organizations into the AFL CIO era, led 1930s sit downs and mass drives, clashed with presidents, financed welfare programs, and became a defining yet controversial figure in American labor history. William Smith Dr., 42, of University of Richmond, and Rev. Alastair Walker, Spartanburg First Baptist, who withdrew before voting. Voting used electronic punch cards.
Lt Burton Ginger of Dallas and Spec Michael Ferreira from Cape Cod describe combat strain among US Army engineers at Dak To base near the Cambodian border. Lt Col Neuman Howard notes M16 shortages while engineers, including the 299th Battalion, contend with heavy fighting and perimeter defense after a relocation from Dak To base to a new Special Forces camp near Ben Het.
In Moscow a Soviet protest note accused China of invading Soviet territory in Kazakhstan near Sinkiang provoking a border incident. Beijing countered, saying the Soviet side provoked the clash and holds China responsible for its consequences.
The bill would preempt FCC authority on radio and TV cigarette advertising, sparking debate over health warnings and youth protection.
