Colombia’s Peaceful Agrarian Reform Expands Farmland Ownership
The Agrarian Reform Institute in Colombia, established in 1960, has issued titles to over 100 000 families who now own land through purchase expropriation or gifts. By 1969 about 80 000 families were buying farms under a government program, with U S and international aid supporting loans totalling more than 18 5 million dollars. The shift from sharecropping to land ownership increased small farmers' income, with many now owning around 50 acres each and enjoying greater rewards than prior statistics suggested.
