A series of blasts rocked the Du Pont Et. de Nemours rubber plant in Louisville Kentucky late Tuesday night injuring four people none seriously. The cause was traced to several acetylene tanks. Fire department officials say flames broke through the roof of the gray L shaped building after an early morning fire alarm at 2 16 a m. The blaze reportedly started in the basement near the stairwell and spread via an unused shaft to the third floor. The 12th victim identified as Joyce Franks, 21. Neighbors Cornelius and Charles Twenter helped warn residents as smoke thickened and doors were opened to escape. Police found no evidence of arson and the owner said she purchased the property about 12 years ago after a prior fire. Residents noted the building offered lower rents and housed several families with children.
Former Gov Robert B Meyner Democrat and Rep William T Cahill Republican won party nominations in New Jersey primaries and will face each other in November. Meyner led rivals by more than two to one with about 80 percent counted while Cahill defeated Rep Charles W Sandman Jr in a tight GOP contest.
