Johnson on Dominican Republic and the Communist threat

President Johnson said the Communist threat in the Dominican Republic remains active though less so than during the revolution. He rejected a new Johnson doctrine for U.S. troops, stressing that Communism is incompatible with the inter American system and urging the Organization of American States to craft a broadly based government with Dominican support. He offered no desire for a unilateral military or political solution and urged inter American cooperation.

Cult leader Allah charged after Harlem disorderly march

More than 150 followers gathered in Harlem for a bail hearing as Allah and five aides were arrested amid a disorderly march crowds clashed with police. Authorities reported assaults on officers and a passerby with a six foot pole, while threats of violence were issued against white residents. Allah faced charges of assault resisting arrest unlawful assembly conspiracy and marijuana possession with bonds up to 9500 each.
