In a tough Commons session Prime Minister Harold Wilson defended Labour’s austerity drive amid a no confidence bid. He argued sterling is key in backing global trade and warned devaluation would threaten Britain’s reserves and the pound’s stability, with importers pressured by dollar weakness and Britain serving as banker to the sterling area. The vote fell 325 to 246 in favor of the government.
