Inoculation Aims To Halt Dutch Elm Disease Spread
The Dutch elm disease Ceratocystis Ulmi, spread by bark beetles, has devastated elms in Europe and entered American trees via veneer imports in the 1930s. Shell Oil developed Bidrin capsules placed around trunks to release insect deterrent for 30 days, protecting trees during the vulnerable 20 day fungus window. Milwaukee tested 16,000 inoculations this year with near perfect results.
