March Planned In Chicago After Marquette Park Clash

Viking lander prepared for Mars descent wake up

In Pasadena scientists prepared to wake the Viking lander for its Mars descent search for life. They tested the tiny lander lab equipment and cameras, which will be reactivated Monday morning after months of inactivity. The Viking Lander Biology Experiment, box sized like a car battery, holds miniature labs for three life-search tests. Valves in the biology instrument will be closed during wake up to keep dust and debris from blocking moving parts.

Negotiators to Meet Over Carolina Telephone Dispute

Tarboro NC AP negotiators from CT&T will meet Monday with state union leaders and national negotiators to resolve a wage dispute as the 1800 Communications Workers of America workers vote against a 7.5 percent raise seeking 10 percent. Union director William Holden said a large margin rejection could trigger a strike, with a national CWA rep to be called in. The contract expired June 29 and extended to Monday night for voting. service continuation is expected despite possible labor action. Willis Marshall said management would shift staff to installer and office roles if a strike occurs. the company serves 38 eastern NC counties and employs about 4,500 workers, with 3,100 authorized union members. The Monday meeting is set for 1 p.m. in Rocky Mount Tarboro.

Floods push 75,000 from Tamaulipas Veracruz coast

More than 75,000 people fled 13 communities as the Panuco River swelled toward the Gulf coast, worsened by two tropical storms. About 120 killed, 220,000 homeless, with evacuations in Tampico Ciudad Madero and Ciudad Mante and emergency aid ordered by President Echeverria.
