Plane Crash Survivors Say Never Gave Up Hope
Two survivors of a radar picket plane crash off Falmouth Mass say they never gave up hope after 10 hours adrift in the Atlantic. Of 19 aboard the Super Constellation, three survived. Lt Bruce Witcher and Airman David Surles spoke from hospital while Airman John Puopolo remained under treatment. Nine bodies were recovered and seven were missing as Coast Guard and other forces continued the search. The $2.5 million aircraft from Otis AFB carried electronic gear to warn of possible enemy action. The crew faced a blaze on the No 3 engine near the fuselage during ditching.
