Banks Urged To Branch Statewide By VBA Committee
HOT SPRINGS AP Virginia bankers debated statewide branching with a VBA committee recommending allowing statewide branches while urging member input before a final stance. Independent bankers formed a new association last month opposing statewide branching. The panel cited competitive gaps between cities and counties and noted thrift institutions can branch statewide. It warned against risk of resource concentration and favored preserving rural needs, predicting growth in electronic transfers but noting a fully checkless society is a decade away.

Virginia faces 114 million for new prisons by 1978
A Virginia legislative panel heard that over 114 million dollars must be spent to house convicts by mid 1978, with about 37 million for 1976 78 and 3 million more for deficits. Alternatives to imprisonment and use of local jails could save building funds amid crowding and inadequate Department of Corrections planning. A 26.5 million contingency may be needed to balance the two year period ending June 30.
