Gen Mohammad Zia ul Haq, new martial law ruler, says the army seized power on July 4 to prevent civil war after deadlocked talks with Bhutto and the opposition. He hopes Bhutto will run in October elections and says the takeover was planned with commanders and carried out openly.
Twelve hijackers seized a Kuwait Airlines Boeing 707 from Beirut and landed at a Persian Gulf sheikhdom airport. They freed several hostages, demanded six Arab ambassadors negotiate, and sought freedom for 300 prisoners. Ambassadors from Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Iraq, South Yemen, and Tunisia were summoned to the control tower as negotiations began.
Virginia remains sultry with scattered thundershowers possible in the south and lingering southwest. North Carolina sees partly cloudy skies with widely scattered storms Saturday and Sunday. He criticized the Communist hierarchy as unstable and said the gang of four still holds limited influence. Fan fled with details and claimed lack of freedom on the mainland and famine deaths. A Taiwan official said no Communist plane chase occurred.
FBI agents nabbed Earl Van Denton 27 and Paul Ruiz 24 in downtown Portland as they tried to enter a taxi linked to an Oklahoma slaying. The pair face extradition hearings and are held on a $250,000 bond on illegal flight charges while Oklahoma pursues prosecution.
