Israel and Egypt Near Mideast Talks Shift on Key Demands
Diplomatic sources report Israel softened two main negotiating points including withdrawal from the Gidi and Mitla passes while central issues remain. Rabin visits Germany to honor Holocaust victims as Kissinger plans talks in Bonn. A munitions depot blast in central Israel is ruled accidental. In Beirut, Col Ernest Morgan hostage case worsens as U.S. aid to slum districts is demanded. Egypt’s Fahmy says no new proposals and confirms Egypt’s stance unchanged from Aswan. Israel now seeks shorter treaty terms and partial demilitarization with a staged ground implemention. Secret clauses aim to calm diplomacy, and talks consider oilfield and land corridor issues with U.S. technicians likely to assist.

Larry Adler the American harmonica star was cleared of shoplifting charges by a London magistrate. He shook hands with the female store detective Eleanor Bennett who had detained him and thanked her with a miniature harmonica. Adler said he planned a celebration at a party with his fiancee Lady Selina Hastings after leaving Bow Street. He had been accused of stealing two boxes of toffee from a West End shop months earlier, claiming he left to buy railroad tickets and intended to return to pay.
