Terrorists Shoot U S Embassy Car in Tehran and Abduct Officer
A U S embassy car was stopped in downtown Tehran during rush hour and an Iranian employee, 25, was fatally shot. The assault marks the third embassy employee killed in six weeks. In Beirut, security forces cleared battle zones while a U S Col. Ernest R Morgan remained missing after being seized by gunmen. Stateside, Cols Paul R Shaffer Jr and Jack H Turner were killed in Tehran on May 21. Ambassador Richard Helms condemned the violence as barbaric. Premier Hoveyda vowed punishment for criminals. In Beirut no trace of Morgan was found amid a cease fire and ongoing urban fighting that left 260 dead. Morgan, 43, was attached to CENTO in Ankara. The embassy said Morgan was seized at a traffic circle near a Palestinian refugee camp.
