U S forces plan to pull 20,000 combat troops from the 3rd Military Region around Saigon over four months and end combat role there. Remaining forces will number about 5,000 to guard installations as two U S brigades depart plus 25th infantry brigades. The 2nd Field Force becomes advisory. 45,000 total combat troops to depart by June with Leathernecks of the Marine Amphibious Force among first out.

Kidnap of British Envoy Reveals Security Gaps

The British Embassy said the ambassador and his small security team were unarmed during the kidnapping, highlighting a standard policy difference with other embassies in Montevideo. Jordanian Forces Face Guerrilla Attacks Near Amman

Jordanian and guerrilla forces battled near Jerash and Ajloun as Sherif Nasser Ben Jamil returned to Amman and met officers. The government denied fighting south of Jerash while alleging guerrillas blew a viaduct near Salt. The Front claimed troops shelled guerrilla hideouts and mopup operations expanded in an 80 square mile zone north of Amman toward the Ajloun mountains.

Army plans new en listed evaluation system in near term

The Army will implement a new enlist ed evaluation system by July 1 with six month pre end enlistment screening to decide re enlistment. It uses an efficiency report and an occupational specialty test to judge performance and promotion potential with review boards to ensure fairness. Project 100 000 enlistees will face usual criteria after remedial training and may perform as well as standard entrants.

Hog Farmers Protests Swine Rally At White House

About 180 farmers from North Carolina and Virginia brought 54 trucks carrying Hampshire and other hogs to the White House in a peaceful demonstration titled Operation Pork Chop. They protested prices dipping from 26 to roughly 15 cents a pound, with plans to present 10 hogs to President Nixon, who was away in California. Police guarded the scene. no administration official appeared.
