Wartorn world eased into the new year with festive songs and church prayers while fears of Vietnam lingered. In New York City Mayor elect Lindsay planned to push for a peace talks result, as Times Square hosted the countdown and a new 1965-to-1966 clock. Japanese bells marked the Year of the Snake and Horse, echoing hopes for peace amid global tension.
Paris reports special envoy Arthur Goldberg briefed President de Gaulle on the U S peace offensive for Viet Nam. De Gaulle said France will stay out of the conflict and will not join any war not its own. Harriman planned talks with Tito and Shastri as Kosygin reiterated demand for U S pullout before talks.
News from South Vietnam reports no air raids on North Viet Nam for the ninth day as Johnson peace efforts expand. Meanwhile, U S planes attacked targets in South Vietnam to support ground troops, with one plane lost in bad weather. Allied forces fought near the central coast as Viet Cong overran a district HQ and massed near Quang Ngai. Saigon officials, reviewing the year, warned of intensified military activity into 1966. A horn message to Viet Cong accompanied the coverage.
Washington reports President Johnson delays key Viet Nam choices until a peace offensive shows if Communists seek negotiated settlement. Bombing pause in North Viet Nam continues as U S probes continue into the new year for a Red response. Congress meets January 10 with the budget due January 25 heavily weighed by defense outlays.
A passenger radioed an SOS as the 96-foot windjammer Carmanda ran aground on a Florida reef. Coast Guard helicopters evacuated 24 passengers to Homestead Air Force Base and the remaining 11 crewmen and passengers to Miami Beach, aided by a patrol boat. The stranded ship was part of Windjammer Cruises and was under Captain Michae Burke during a 10 day Bahama Islands cruise.
NEW YORK AP Michael J. Quill, head of the Transport Workers Union, warned that only a miracle could stop a New Year s Day transit strike that could paralyze a city of 15 million. He dismissed belief in miracles, urged preparation for a 5 am strike despite a state injunction, and said picket lines would shut the system. Negotiations with the Transit Authority and mediation efforts continued as the deadline neared.
A record breaking warm spell covered much of the nation Friday boosting golf rounds and sparking mild weather from Central Texas to New England. Temperatures hit records in many cities including 51 in Green Bay 64 in Windsor Locks and 63 in New York City as Detroit noted its warmest December 31 in this century.
Bethlehem Steel Corp announced a $5-a-ton price increase on some products with offices closed for New Year’s Eve. President Johnson and his economic adviser Gardner Ackley criticized the move as unwarranted and inflationary, urging immediate talks with Bethlehem. Ackley noted 1985 had been strong for steel and Bethlehem’s nine month profits rose 83 percent from 1963, while Johnson pressed the broader national interest amid Viet Nam concerns.
Water from record snow and rainstorms flooded the Salt River area near Phoenix and its suburbs. Floodgates released water from six reservoirs to avert disaster, forcing thousands to flee. A car carried a young man believed drowned as the river crested at 73 009 cubic feet per second around Mesa Tempe and Phoenix. Traffic jams clogged New Year’s Eve routes. a runway and I 10 freeway were damaged.
Richmond introduces a 2 percent local sales tax starting at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, joining 13 Virginia cities in added revenue. The tax applies to purchases of 15 cents or more with a $4 ceiling on $200 and up. Medicines and motor fuels are exempt for now, but exemptions may be extended after April 1 pending state decisions.
Dr. Hans H. Karnitschnig, Virginia Beach state medical examiner, ruled the deaths of two men in a meadow crash as murder by own action. George Benney Ricketts, 25, allegedly drove at about 100 mph after a fight with his girlfriend, crashing into Navy CWO George A. Ingmire, 39, father of three.
Greenville crash killed Capt. Glenn D. Allen Jr. and Marion M. Dickerson. Allen recently returned from Southeast Asia and worked as a test pilot for LTV Electrosystems. Dickerson, a private aircraft owner from Belton, lived with his wife and two sons on Rt. 3. The two were on a private flight not related to work when the two-seater crashed seven miles south of Greenville.
A student led conference in Richmond on January 8 aims to address cheating in schools after a survey of about 100 high schools shows 70 percent face a serious cheating problem. Organizers from Huguenot High School report pressure from parents and colleges as key reasons, with significant portions of students admitting various cheating behaviors and a plan for a statewide action program involving 150 representatives from 40 schools. The event is supported by the Junior Chamber of Commerce anti cheating efforts.
Virginia reports cloudy warm conditions with possible light rain and cooler trends Saturday across north and west areas with highs 55 to 60 north and west and 60s southeast. Saturday night mainly cloudy with lows in the 40s north and 50s south. North Carolina notes partly cloudy mild Saturday with highs 59 to 67 in mountains and 67 to 75 elsewhere. Sunday mostly cloudy with possible showers in the west and little temperature change.
